Windows PC iTunes (bedroom) to stereo system (living room)
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Follow (another reviewer) GadgetHead’s setup advice. You’ll need to connect the Apple Airport Express via CAT-5 cable to your computer or network router for setup. I phoned for Apple help and they walked me through it – very helpful support (and I am NOT one of those infernal Apple acolytes!).
After setup, iTunes works so great and the sound in my living room stereo is wonderful. I also have a iPod Touch 2G 32GB which I use as a remote control in my living room to select music. Totally cool.
Remember, use a network cable to the Airport Express for setup but then you will disconnect the cable and put it next to your stereo. That is assuming you are not using it as your primary wireless router. Call Apple Cust Svc if you begin going down in flames as I did.
No Connectivity to VPN from Mac
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
As long as you don’t have to connect to a VPN using a Mac, this product is really great. Coming from a Linksys router, the set up was extremely easy and was up and running in 5 to 10 minutes. The instructions and software are very easy to follow. It has nice extra features like the ability to connect a printer to it for network printing or connect speakers to it to send sound wirelessly. HOWEVER, YOU CANNOT CONNECT TO VPN USING A MAC. I called Apple and after a week, they had not resolved the problem. If you go to their website and do some research, you will find that this issue was brought up back in 2007. Now, if you don’t need to connect to the VPN at your office, you will be fine. It looks cool, does not add any extra wires (since it connects straight to the wall plug), the range is good, and it performs excellent. I had to return it, though, because I have to connect to my office. Note that when you connect a printer to it, it is only for printing. If you have an all-in-one printer, the only functionality you can use through it is printing. The USB port cannot be used to plug a hard drive or anything else.

Apple’s AirPort express is truly awesome. Such a versatile little gizmo. I bought it for use as a means to obtaining whole-house audio, since I have neither the technical knowledge, carpentry skills, or time to wire my entire house for sound. I simply took an older stereo of mine, hooked up the speakers, plugged in the AirPort Express, set it up, and in LITERALLY MINUTES, I was streaming audio to the stereo. I set it up in my master bedroom, so now I can do chores in the house and hear my music everywhere (my system includes an AppleTV hooked up to a separate stereo/entertainment center with Bose speakers and my Apple computer and its Monsoon speakers & subwoofer). I would definitely recommend getting the Apple Airport Express Stereo Connection Kit w/Monster Cables–I’m using the optical stereo connection that comes with that and the sound is great. Plus, it includes an extension for the wall plug on the AirPort Express, so you don’t have to limit yourself to having the AirPort plugged directly in the wall–you have a few feet to play with if your stereo (or printer or whatever you’re hooking up to it) isn’t right there. The only thing I would change is its size–it’s certainly not huge, but there’s always room for improvement; oh, and maybe also some way to stream video over your network–can’t have it all! But in general, I love this product and I’m actually thinking of buying another one to hook up to ANOTHER stereo in my living room. You should definitely get this if you’re considering it–it’s well worth the investment.
Cheap, esay to set up, stable, good sound performance but frustrating !

I’m using the Airport Express for 6 month now, until I’ll find something better.
Pos : Price, reliability, settle in an outlet. Efficient, reliable and easy setup procedure. Excellent sound performance using digital optical output.
Manage medias from the computer (no need of remote control and no need to turn TV on)
Cons : For good sound quality, need to be used with preamp equiped with optical digital input or additionnal Optical D / A converter. Insuficient analogic output performance for use with audiophile system (Big difference with Logitech Transporter). However you’ll ear no difference on low cost stereo systems.
Very limited use because bonded with iTune (iTune is a very convenient media player but you’ll have no freedom and no flexibility. Can just play your music library and web radios) Cannot play other sound from the computer. I.E. : Cannot play radio using their own player.
Easier then pouring a glass of water.

Having never setup a wireless connection I was not sure how this would go. I could not have been easier. First I opened the package. Second I read the instructions. Third connected the cable modem to the Airport Express. Fourth plugged the Express into an outlet. Fifth I enabled the Airport program on my MAC. Sixth I unplugged the power to my cable modem, waited 30 seconds and plugged it back in. Seventh I checked for a green light on the Airport Express and began surfing the internet. All this took less then 10 minutes, most of which was reading the instructions and waiting for the cable modem to reboot.
Next I tried the WiFi connection with my iPhone and bingo all works fine. I have a hardwired printer and will likely keep that setup. As for the iTune connection, I may try that at sometime in the future but I connect my iPhone directly to my music system so I likely will not use that feature anytime soon. However, it’s nice to know that option is there for the future.
All in all I could not be happier. The WiFi speed is about the same as my former direct connection to the cable modem, maybe slightly faster.
I am using a MAC and am not sure it the Windows setup is as easy.
